Biology Beyond Boundaries: Mitochondrial Insights, Computational Breakthroughs, and Clinical Transformations: International Conference Hosted by Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India, January 29–31, 2024

Abstract

The Department of Biotechnology at Savitribai Phule Pune University organized an International Conference on Biology Beyond Boundaries: Mitochondrial Insights, Computational Breakthroughs, and Clinical Transformations. The symposium provided a highly interactive platform for sharing scientific ideas, cultural enrichment, and collaborations between scientists working across multidisciplinary areas including cell death and mitochondrial biology, computational approaches, and translational research to combat various human diseases. More than 250 delegates including international scientists, junior investigators, and students joined this exciting event. Several sessions were dedicated for junior investigators and graduate students to highlight scientific excellence as well as to gather scientific feedback in advancing their ongoing research. Although promising progress has been made in infectious diseases in India, noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, cardiac, and neurodegenerative diseases are increasing, leading to higher funding in these areas of research. The success of this meeting has provided a platform for future scientific conferences, which will foster collaborations between multidisciplinary areas of biological sciences to prevent and treat various human diseases in India, as well as further showcase the progress in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology throughout India.

Meeting Highlights

The International Conference on Biology Beyond Boundaries: Mitochondrial Insights, Computational Breakthroughs, and Clinical Transformations (https://events.unipune.ac.in/sites/Biotechnology/) was held between January 29–31, 2024, at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India. This conference was organized by Prof. Rajesh Gacche, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India; Prof. Raymond B. Birge, Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, USA; and Prof. Dhyan Chandra, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, USA. This 3-day conference was highly successful and attracted more than 250 delegates, which include international scientists, Indian scientists, junior investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. This conference provided unique platform for scientific exchange across many areas of basic and translation sciences and attracted more than 60 senior scientists from USA, Europe, and India. During 3-day meeting with two parallel sessions, 4 keynote talks, 11 plenary talks, 60 senior scientist talks were delivered in the diverse areas of biology and human diseases, such as cell death and mitochondrial biology, cancer and neudegenerative diseases, and other scientific areas involving diverse disease types. Various sessions were dedicated for platform presentations from young investigators, graduate students, and women in science. Additionally, more than 120 posters were presented focusing on diverse areas of multidisciplinary research in biological sciences. All the speakers and poster presentations are enumerated in the appendix in this meeting report.

Three major themes in the conference included (i) mitochondria, cell death, and human diseases, (ii) computational breakthrough and human disease management, and (iii) clinical research and transformations in health care. The inaugural ceremony on 29th January was addressed by the convenors of the conference: Prof. Rajesh Gacche, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India; and Prof. Dhyan Chandra, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, USA. The opening ceremony was also addressed by Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairman MS Swaminathan Foundation; Prof. Suresh Gosavi, Vice-Chancellor, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune; Dr. Cyrus Poonawala, Chairman and Managing Director, Serum Institutute of India; Dr. Adar Poonawala, CEO of Serum Institutute of India and Prof. Smita Zinjarde, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune; and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Amul Sakharkar and Dr. Santosh Kathwate, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India.

Many scientific sessions highlighted basic and translational research focused on mitochondrial and cell death biology, cancer biology, neurodegenerative diseases, and many interdisciplinary areas of research related to vaccine development and various human disease outbreaks. The scientific sessions included four keynote lectures. Prof. Douglas W. Wallace, Director of the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, USA, summarized the current advances in mitochondrial medicine in the pandemic era by highlighting how mitochondrial bioenergetics has broad implications for both inherited and acquired diseases. Prof. Raymond B. Birge, Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Newark, New Jersey, discussed on how phosphatidylserine exposure, efferocytosis, and cell death pathways could be utilized for therapeutic intervention for various human diseases. Dr. Amel Karaa, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts, USA, highlighted clinical updates on mitochondrial medicine. Prof. Stefan H.E. Kaufmann, Max Plank Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin, Germany, elaborated on basic research to clinical application to manage tuberculosis.

In this 3-day conference, many senior scientists discussed and exchanged their ongoing research related to mitochondrial biology, cell death biology, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, vaccine development, communicable diseases, and disease outbreaks and pandemic management. Details of the senior scientists and abstracts of their talks are also presented in the following section, which contains titles of talks and affiliations of the authors. During the panel discussion, panel members led by Prof. Dhyan Chandra and Prof. Rajesh Gacche elaborated the current challenges in mitochondrial medicine and preparedness for disease outbreaks. The panel members also discussed the challenges faced by young investigators in advancing their scientific careers in academia and industries. Overall, the conference provided a platform for sharing scientific ideas across multidisciplinary fields by vibrant interactions among esteemed speakers and delegates as well as highlighting advances in mitochondrial biology and therapeutics in cancer, neurodegenrative diseases, communicable diseases, and other human diseases. The meeting was concluded by bestowing best oral and poster presentation awards to deserving young investigators and graduate students. In all, the meeting highlighted the rapid pace of biomedical research in India, opened new avenues of research and collaborations, and provided a culturally enriching experience for all.
